Enhancing Comfort and Healing for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries: The Role of Sensoria Mat

Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) have a profound impact on a person's life, resulting in loss of mobility and numerous complications. For individuals who have been confined to a wheelchair for an extended period, the development of pressure ulcers can significantly affect their quality of life. Spinal cord injury patients are often quite young, and our bodies are not designed to sit for extended periods, many years in this case, leading to serious challenges. Fortunately, advancements in assistive technologies have opened new doors for addressing these concerns. One such innovation is the Sensoria Mat, which was developed in collaboration with Rancho Research Institute in Los Angeles and offers a promising preventative solution to help to reduce risk of ulceration, improve healing, and enhance the overall quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Spinal cord injuries occur when there is damage to the spinal cord, resulting in a loss of sensation and motor function below the injury site. This loss of mobility always leads to prolonged periods of sitting in a wheelchair, which can cause various complications, including pressure sores, blisters, and discomfort. When the body is subjected to continuous pressure and limited movement, it can negatively affect blood circulation and skin health. The resulting blisters and sores can be painful, prone to infection, and lead to serious ulcerations which often are extremely challenging to heal.

Human bodies are designed for movement, and extended periods of sitting can place significant stress on our musculoskeletal and circulatory systems. For individuals with SCIs, who may spend most of their day in a wheelchair, it is extremely hard to remember to move their body as much as they are supposed to. Therefore, finding ways to alleviate these challenges and improve overall well-being is crucial.

The patent pending Sensoria Mat comes equipped with proprietary textile pressure sensors and microelectronics Sensoria® Core Bluetooth® rechargeable device and customized mobile application.  It is handmade cushion with memory foam to reduce pressure and increase comfort.

Sensoria Mat reminds the user to perform pressure relief activities according to clinician’s prescribed guidance. The mobile plus cloud software system automatically tracks and monitors the quality of each relief exercise, provides expert coaching through a mobile application.

The dedicated mobile application is a full wheelchair wellness coach.  The smartphone app connects with the sensor infused cushion’s insert to provide alerts and behavioral feedback.

Living with a spinal cord injury presents numerous challenges, including the discomfort and complications associated with prolonged sitting. The Sensoria Mat offers a remarkable solution to enhance the comfort, healing, and overall well-being of individuals with SCI. The Sensoria Mat system is available as a remote patient monitoring system. Clinicians can monitor the pressure relief activities of each patient via a color-coded cloud dashboard.

In Italy the system is available in Milan at Orthobit: https://www.orthobit.it/

Sensoria Mat is available as a textile pressure sensor infused insert that can be used underneath most wheelchair cushions and as a full cushion system option.
